Tri HotStats: monthly European hotel figures

Berlin hotels boosted their profitability by 42.7% in June 2010, according to the latest monthly survey of 10 European countries by Tri Hospitality Consulting.

Events such as the Berlin Gay and Lesbian Festival, Gay Pride, and the Capital of Cultures helped hotels in Berlin increase room occupancy by 5.2 percentage points (to 79.6%) and average room rate by 13.6% to €130.91.

As a result, Berlin hotels achieved a gross operating profit per available room (goppar) of €72.92, the fourth highest in the monthly table.

However, London hotels topped the profitability table with a 14.6% leap in goppar to €125.27.

Wimbledon, along with strong commercial and leisure demand, allowed hotels in the UK capital to lift occupancy by 2.5 percentage points to a rarely-achieved 90% and to raise average room rates by 12.8% to €188.16.

Despite a 0.7% decline in goppar, to €105.21, hotels in Paris were the second most profitable in the survey. While occupancy improved by six percentage points (to 88.8%), average room rate dropped by 7.2%, to €201.86 thanks to challenging commercial rates.

Although Parisian rates remain the highest in the survey, operators are hampered by the highest payroll costs as a percentage of turnover in the survey, while London hotels have the leanest labour costs
